Kasargod is the northernmost district of Kerala. Kasargod district was formed in 1984, separated from Kannur district. Karivala, Pallikere, Thalankara, Kanhangad, Chengala, and Manjeshwaram are the main urban areas. Kasargod, shaped by the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, is rich in natural scenery and environment. Linguistic diversity is the biggest characteristic of Kasargod. Languages such as Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Beary, and Urdu coexist here. The history of Kasargod has developed under the influence of ancient royal dynasties and trade conducted via sea routes. During the medieval period, the rule of the Chirakkal kings and Mysore's Tippu Sultan had an impact on Kasargod. This influence is reflected in Bekal Fort. Folk art forms like Theyyam, Daffmuttu, and Mappila songs illustrate the cultural character of the district. Kasargod’s connection with Karnataka is also evident in its food habits.
